Cole's Woods was named for Norman Cole who had a blacksmith business in the area. The trails of Cole's Woods are historic as the first lighted cross-country ski trails in North America- December of 1971. (Copyright © 2021 Friends of Cole's Woods, I LOVE NY, © 2022 New York Department of Economic Development and [H.P.], Henry Perry Smith)
On the 1st day of February, 1882, Mr. Cole associated with himself F. A. Bullard, the firm name being Norman Cole & Co. — a relation and style which still exists., in the 1880's. [pg. 288]. ([H.P.], Henry Perry Smith)
Norman Cole, was the head of the firm publishing the Messenger, he was born in the town of Queensbury near Glens Falls, June 1st, 1835. His father, Levi Cole, and his grandfather Isaac, were both blacksmiths and re- membered as noted for good honest work. [pg. 288] (H. P., Henry Perry Smith 1839-1925)
Cole's Woods has a historical connection to Halfway Brook and very possibly connected to the old historic trails Mohawk Indians utilized in the area during the French and Indian War 1754-1763.(Anderson, Steele, Carpenter, and Seelye)
Late Tom Jacobs pioneered Cole’s Woods ski trails, in the 1970's. (I LOVE NY, and Mark Frost, The Chronicle, Copyright © 2022 Lone Oak Publishing Co., Inc)
There is 7 Lighted kilometers or (about 4 miles) of trails throughout Cole's Woods. (Copyright LakeGeorge.com © 2022)
Henry Crandall was born near Lake George, NY in 1821. Later a Trust was created in his name: The Crandall Trust bought a large section of land in the northern part of the city & Town of Queensbury, NY. Land was turned into a five hole golf course for a time. Later a park was established and the YMCA would purchase more of the Queensbury side of the park. That would create two parts of the park Cole’s Woods and Crandall Park. The area was named Chepontuc (or hard place to get around) by the Mohawk Indians and settled as Wings Falls after it’s first settler Abraham Wing,(Copyright 2020 by Tales Behind Parks and Trails, Blog at WordPress.com, Warren County New York Genealogy and History, Copyright © Genealogy Trails 2022 )

Carpenter's work for the time-period was both comprehensive and to a degree brief but delineates significant information regrading Halfway Brook and Fort Amherst. The Brook and Fort's location is about a 1/2 mile from the entrances of Cole's Woods via (modern Fire Road, Parkview Ave, and Dixon Road about 1 mile), it would be logical the various fierce episodes Carpenter was referring to involved Cole's Woods between 1755 to 1780. Its also safe to (strongly) propose the two killings by French and allied Native Indians, specifically Mohawk- Haudenosaunee warriors in 1756 and 1758 were interconnected. Its vital to note that Carpenter's work relies greatly on James Fenimore Cooper's several fictional writings. Cooper was famous for his chamming wit, imagined grand narratives, and alterations of local American History, one example most scholars (including myself) refer to is the: Siege and Massacre of Fort William Henry 1757, Lake George, NY: [See: James Fenimore Cooper, Last of the Mohicans; A Narrative of 1757, Illustrator: N. C. Wyeth, Project Gutenberg E-Book and Project Gutenberg License, Juliet Sutrland, Greg Bergquist and the Online Distributed Proofreading Team, New York: Chaeles Scibner's Sons, 1933].
Fred Anderson would agree when he wrote: "..by sunset on August 10, (1757), substantial numbers of men had begun to reach Fort Edward.." "Refugees continued to straggle in from the woods- scared, starving, and sometimes stark naked-for more than a week." "On August 15, (1757) the largest single group arrived,... perhaps five hundred survivors including Colonel Monro..." "They had been brought under French escort to Half-way Brook and handed over to a British guard.." (Anderson. Crucible of war, (Vintage Books, A Division of Random House, Inc New York), Copyright 2000 by Fred Anderson, page. 198) [Also see supporting work of: Ian K Steele, Betrayals, (Oxford University Press), Copyright 1990 by Ian K Steele, Pages 78-148, see: Queensbury Historic Markers, Prepared by Warren County GIS July 2021]
Elizabeth Eggleston Seelye. Lake George in History. Third Edition. Published by Elwyn Seelye, Lake George, N.Y. Harvard University Library. Copyright, 1896, 1897, by Elizabeth Eggleston Seelye. Pp.(Contents), iii, v- 108. [see pages, Halfway Brook: 70-75, 84-92].
Seelye's work provided further proof and support for the above: [Robert] Rogers of Rogers Rangers in the spring of 1758 was order out on a reconnaissance mission from Fort Edward with about 200 British Soldiers, his first stop was Halfway Brook. (pg. 70)
Around the same time-frame but after the British victory at Ticonderoga, General Montcalm had sent a group of Frenchmen with supplies toward South Bay on their way to Fort Edward. One group of French troops was successful annihilating the supply-train and murdering nearly 120 men.(pgs. 84-85) Seelye writes, "...the five hundred Indians and French, under the leadership of....Marin,...immediately laid a...ambush across the path leading to Fort Edward...it ran through a dense thicket...(or forest). Seelye's work agrees with Anderson, Steele, Carpenter and the other sources below.

The above suggests Cole at least gave a "..oath of allegiance.." for military service to the U.S. in 1866 only a year and a few months after nearly 620,000 men and camp-followers perished within the American Civil War 1861-1865.( DPLA: Digital Public Library of America)
